Everton Primary School

Everyone. Everyday. Everlasting.

British Values

At Everton Primary School we uphold and teach pupils about the British Values. The Department for Education have reinforced the need "to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British Values" which are defined as:

  • Democracy
  • Rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

The Government set out its definition of British Values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. Everton Primary School takes opportunities to actively promote British Values through our assemblies and whole school systems and structures such as electing and running a successful School Council. We also actively promote the British Values through ensuring that our curriculum planning and delivery includes real opportunities for exploring these values.

Democracy

Children are listened to and are taught to listen carefully to others. Children are taught to respect the right of individuals to have their voices and opinions heard. They are taught to discuss issues in a balanced and calm way.

We have a school council which meets regularly with the Headteacher to discuss issues raised in class council meetings. The council is genuinely able to effect change within the school. Children have an annual questionnaire where they are able to put forward their views about the school.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they are those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced at Everton Primary School. Pupils are taught from an early age the rules of the school. These are our Golden Rules. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind rules and laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities, such as the Police and Fire Service, help reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty

At Everton Primary School, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our ESafety and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) lessons.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect and we encourage understanding of those of different faiths and beliefs. We actively promote diversity through our celebrations of different faiths and cultures. Religious Education (RE) lessons and PSHE lessons reinforce messages of tolerance and respect for others. Members of different faiths and religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school. The children visit places of worship that are important to different faiths.

Mutual respect is a core value at Everton Primary School. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect.

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Everton Primary School is situated in a rural area that is not greatly, culturally diverse. The school recognises its role in preparing children for life in modern Britain. We actively promote celebrations of different faiths and cultures. The RE syllabus is the agreed Nottinghamshire syllabus. Through RE and PSHE we reinforce messages of tolerance and respect.

The curriculum

We actively promote the British Values through ensuring that our curriculum planning and delivery includes real opportunities for exploring these values and staff regularly review the curriculum to ensure that it promotes the areas above. It also ensures that pupils are taught about key events and figures in history. Events during the year celebrate culturally diverse occasions and memorable events taking place in the country.

Actively promoting British Values also means challenging pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.
