How a Holi Colour Run supports the equality objectives
A Holi Colour Run has direct and positive impact on our understanding of race. Holi is a Hindu spring festival celebrated across India, Nepal and by South Asian diaspora communities worldwide. Using it as the basis for a school event ensured that we:
- Brought a non-Western cultural tradition into the mainstream of school life, making it visible and celebrated rather than marginal
- Helped pupils/parents/carers from other backgrounds (particularly South Asian backgrounds) see their heritage reflected and valued in our school
- Gave all pupils a 'real life', joyful experience of another culture, which is more effective at building positive attitudes than classroom-only learning
- Contributed meaningfully to the "Diversity and Belonging group" action and the annual celebration strand of the curriculum diversity work
- Brought communities together as we organised this alongside one of our collaborative schools - Mattersey Primary School.
